The word collage comes from the French word, coller, which means to glue.
Collage art is items being glued to a surface to create something new. Collage became a form of art during the period of Picasso and Braque. Picasso created his art piece, "Still Life with Chair Caning," with oil cloth being glued to a surface. This was created in May of 1912.
